President Nazarbayev’s five social initiatives: Educational grants - Kazakh TV

Kazakh students are given unprecedented support under the framework of President Nazarbayev’s five social initiatives. An additional 20,000 grants are allocated to university applicants including 11,000 scholarships for technical professions that are currently in demand, such as engineers, IT specialists, robotics and nanotechnologies.

RISHAT RAMAZANOV, DIRECTOR, CENTER FOR TECHNICAL AND VOCATIONAL EDUCATION, EAST KAZAKHSTAN REGION:

- Educational grants were given to about 26 per cent of students in the 2017-2018 academic year. This year, thanks to President Nazarbayev’s five social initiatives, the number of allocated grants has increased. We hope that they will improve the quality of higher education in our East Kazakhstan region.

Recruiters of Ulba Metallurgical Plant are thoroughly selecting professional staff for its uranium and beryllium production. However, there are only a few specialists who are skilled to work with the latest digital equipment even in the industrial region. In lieu of the modernization of industries, employers are requesting for new IT specialists. 20 IT centers will be opened in Kazakh companies and regional universities. The centers will be able to train 35,000 trainees annually.

VALERIA GAMULINA, MANAGER, METALLURGICAL PLANT:

- There is currently a shortage of technologist, automation engineers, mechanics and power engineers. We have started cooperation by providing training on new technologies to the personnel in nuclear power and uranium industries

In the new academic year, students of Eastern Kazakhstan will be provided with 2,500 republican grants in addition to the regional grants. Officials of North Kazakhstan region are planning to introduce 29 new professions for the allocated grants. Moreover, the value of the educational grants will increase.

YERBOL ISAKAYEV, PRO-RECTOR, KOZYBAYEV NORTH KAZAKHSTAN STATE UNIVERSITY:

- The value of grants for technical and agricultural scholarships will be increased up to the levels of the national universities. It is very good, because we all understand that technical equipment and salaries for faculty are part of the grants.

Heads of universities hope that the additional 20,000 educational grants will also solve another issue, such as the outflow of young people to other countries with a larger selection of professions in universities.
