100 new textbooks in Kazakh

The textbooks used in Harvard, Oxford and other leading universities in the world are accessible in Kazakh language to students in Kazakhstan. The first 18 bestselling science books, which were translated and published in Kazakh, will be available in all national universities in Kazakhstan by the end of the month. The textbooks were selected from the list offered by the universities. According to experts, the contents of the books are related to modern trends which will enlighten and inspire the students.

RAUAN KENZHEKHANULY, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, NATIONAL TRANSLATION BUREAU:

 - Good textbooks are republished, updated and distributed widely. Our textbooks must have at least three such editions. The latest edition should be published no earlier than 2014. The textbooks should be modern. Today, a textbook is not only a paper book, but it also contains ideas that students can use to work on independently.

One of the bestselling textbooks, ‘A History of Modern Psychology’ written by Duane Schultz and Sydney Schultz was translated into Kazakh language. The book has 11 editions in the United States and it is one of the most popular books in the world’s leading universities. The book was also translated into other languages.

SHERUBAI KURMANBAIULY, PROFESSOR, PHD IN PHILOLOGY:

 - Of course, international terminology should not be translated, but the Kazakh terminology has to be developed in order to explain an idea accurately. If there are successful alternatives like synonyms in Kazakh they should be used without hesitation. If we say that Kazakh is the language of science, then the scientific terminology should appear in Kazakh, too. We need to be creative in addressing such topics.

Video lectures will assist in summarizing 1000-page textbooks. According to the editors at the National Translation Bureau, 20 video lectures can be filmed from each of the 100 textbooks. The books and the videos are available on the ‘openyou.kz’ website. The filming of the video has already begun.

ELMIRA ORAZALIYEVA, ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR, KAZAKH LANGUAGE AND TURKIC STUDIES, NAZARBAYEV UNIVERSITY:

- The videos will be provided to students who do not always have the time to read every book in the current world of information flow.

Another 30 textbooks will be translated into Kazakh by the end of this year. As part of the 100 textbooks project, bestselling books in philosophy, sociology, psychology, culture, philology and economics will be translated. All information about the textbooks is available on the 100kitap.kz website.
