Scientists from Almaty have found a way to process low-quality wood and strengthen its value. The scientists studied the properties of green plantations. Every tree has its own DNA. The birch or poplar can be as strong as the oak. This allowed to significantly expand the possibilities of furniture production without reducing the country's forests. This is a non-waste project.

KANAT MUSABAYEV, CHIEF ENGINEER:

 - At our enterprise, we produce composite materials based on polymers and wood. We have already started the production of furniture components, such as furniture facades, countertops and plates for interiors. Now, the most important goal is the serial production of sinks and bathtubs with access to foreign markets.

Technology of wood degeneration includes several stages: chemical and thermal treatments. Then the wood is saturated with polymers in the reactor chamber. Only after this stage, the material becomes increasingly high-value.

LEILA SABIROVA, CO-DIRECTOR, RESEARCH PROJECT:

 - Our technology is competitive, because it is economically profitable. We use cheap sorts of trees which are economically viable and in demand.

The project for processing low-quality timber is among the 96 research projects that have won grants for financing and commercialization.

 - Our projects and grants are complex. I set the task for the project coordinators not only to control, but also to find out how to bring a project to the market, how to help an entrepreneur or a scientist to implement a project.

Unique wood processing enterprise has clients in Astana, Almaty and Shymkent. Moreover, representatives of a shipbuilding company from the United States are showing interest, too.
