KAZAKHSTAN IN UN SECURITY COUNCIL
Kyrgyzstan political scientists perceive Kazakhstan’s membership in the UN Security Council as a unique opportunity to attract the world’s attention to Central Asia. All aspects of the region's development are important here, including socio-political, economic and even environmental aspects.
NURLAN YESHKEYEV, FIRST SECRETARY, KAZAKH EMBASSY IN KYRGYZSTAN:
- Raising issues relevant for Central Asia in the UN Security Council and bringing public attention to them is one of the most important goals for our country’s foreign policy. We are responsible for our region.
Kazakhstan’s priorities are creation and maintenance of an atmosphere of cooperation, good neighborliness and security in Central Asia. Nursultan Nazarbayev always emphasizes this. Kazakhstan intends to help make Central Asian states and, in particular, its nearest neighbor Kyrgyzstan, successful and prosperous.
MARS SARIYEV, POLITICAL SCIENTIST:
- Before inclusion of a Central Asian state in to the UN Security Council, we had to follow the agenda set by the global players. At present, there is an opportunity for all Central Asian countries, including Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan, to set a certain agenda, which reflects interests of the whole region.
As was stated at the meeting with the Kyrgyz political scientists, Kazakhstan intends to resume discussions on a variety of regional issues in the UN Security Council. Among them are food security, climate change, alternative energy and environmental protection.
