The World Federation of United Nations Associations had also observed the Astana negotiations on Syria settlement
Russian international security experts have highly evaluated Kazakhstan’s role in the settlement of Syria conflict. The political scientists say Kazakhstan takes a special place in political arena and note its friendly relations with such key players as Russia, the USA, Iran and Syria itself, that impacts the course of negotiations and their outcome.
ALEXEY FENENKO, EXPERT, RAS INSTITUTE OF INTERNATIONAL SECURITY PROBLEMS:
Kazakhstan became the country that could mediate and provide a negotiations platform for Russia, Turkey and Iran. I would like to emphasize that it wasn’t the Moscow format, Tehran or Ankara format, but Astana format, which indicates that Kazakhstan may become a good platform for Syria negotiations. It brings Kazakhstan’s diplomacy to a new level.
The World Federation of United Nations Associations had also observed the Astana negotiations on Syria settlement. The two round talks held in January and February gave hope to ending the bloodshed in that region. The negotiations resulted in creation of the Syrian ceasefire monitoring group with the participation of Iran, Russia and Turkey. The World Federation of United Nations Associations considers Astana as a platform for Syrian conflict settlement.
BONIAN GOLMOHAMMADI, SECRETARY GENERAL, WORLD FEDERATION OF UNITED NATIONS ASSOCIATIONS:
Kazakhstan has a special position because they are friendly with a number of different key actors, especially Syria they have good relations with, with Russia, with the U.S., with the government of Syria. I think that creates an opportunity for any country that wants to play a role of a mediator. I think in that sense t’s a unique opportunity. I think it’s great finally the situation in Syria has taken a small step forward. Our organization, we have been very disappointed with the role of the Security Council.
