Kazakhstan’s farmers want to apply the latest technologies in agriculture. Meanwhile, Kazakh scientists developed a method for creating the so-called stress resistant grain based on foreign colleagues’ experience. Now, farmers will be able to cultivate a new variety of drought resistant wheat or barley. Previously, it used to take about 20-25 years. Now it takes approximately 4 years.

AIBEK ZHUMALIN, SCIENTIST:

This gives vast opportunities for cultivation of new high-yielding varieties resistant to the so-called stress factors such as, for instance, drought in the Northern Kazakhstan or salt. It will always be in demand since Kazakhstan is the agrarian country cultivating wheat. The main stages of the project are completed. We plan to finish it this year.

Our scientists are inventing a method that will protect potato plants from existing viruses. This is the main prerequisite for a good harvest. Nowadays, the production can be saved by using only special test.

VADIM KHASSANOV, ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR, S. SEIFULLIN KAZAKH AGROTECHNICAL UNIVERSITY:

Basically we are creating the immunodiagnostic tests known as test strips detecting crop infections within 10-15 minutes in non-laboratory conditions and without any qualification skills. Any lab assistant can conduct it: grind a test strip in a special buffer bag, and dip it. Red stripes will appear if any infection detected.

Here are the cucumbers. Students learn to grow them in phytotron where the harvest can be collected in two weeks after sowing.

KALDYGUL OMIRZHANKYZY, THIRD YEAR UNIVERSITY STUDENT:

We see the difference between the ordinary cucumbers and those that were grown in a greenhouse environment. They grow much faster here and give more crops; there is also some difference in flavor.

Today’s educational system puts more emphasis in practical skills, and this is a good trend. Thus, experts plan to use the technology to accelerate the creation of new wheat varieties in small-scale production before the end of this year.
