Kazakh athletes are intensively preparing for the Winter Universiade. World Student Games’ scale is equal to the Olympic Games. Therefore, athletes are set to perform well. Freestyle skiing will be one of the most spectacular events at the Universiade. The correct jump and landing at high speed are the basic conditions for the victory in this type of sport. It requires not only courage but also pinpoint accuracy, the skills that Dmitry Reyherd has. It is him who will represent Kazakhstan at the Universiade in freestyle mogul.

Dmitry REYHERD, MEMBER OF KAZAKH NATIONAL FREESTYLE SKI TEAM:

This is going to be the second Universiade in my life. The first one was in 2015 in Spanish Sierra Nevada. I secured the second place there. Now I am preparing for our Universiade and hope to win.

Yuliya Galysheva plans to be among the winners at the Universiade as well. She demonstrated the best result at Student Games two years ago. Both athletes will miss two World Cups in order to represent Kazakhstan in Student Games in Almaty.

Yulia GALYSHEVA, MEMBER OF KAZAKHSTAN’S FREESTYLE TEAM:

The priority, of course, is given to Winter Universiade 2017. It is a great responsibility, because it will be held in Kazakhstan. And we are proud to participate in the competitions; therefore, we will not attend the World Cup.

Freestyle competitions will begin among the first after the Universiade official opening. They will be held in Shymbulak ski resort and in Tabagan sports and entertainment complex from January 30 till February 7.

With the aim to support Kazakh athletes ahead of the Universiade, more than 300 people gathered in Shymbulak ski resort to shape the inscription “ALGA KZ”. The large-scale flashmob initiated the campaign “Support our athletes!” in the social media. Sports stars and singers, bloggers and active citizens participated in the campaign.
