The new international project ‘Turgay geoglyphs’ will be launched this year. Ten years ago, Kostanay researcher Dmitriy Dei has discovered the first of 344 mysterious earthworks of the steppe by studying satellite images. After the publication in New York Times and the report at the annual scientific forum in Istanbul, Kazakhstan’s miracle has sparked the interest at the European association of archaeologists. The miracle is the so-called Ushtogaysky Square, an area equal to eight football fields. At first, Dei and his colleagues were puzzled why the Neolithic nomads needed such huge swastikas in the form of rings, lines and crosses? The similar constructions in Peru gave a hint that this was a calendar. In the days of the equinoxes and solstices, the sun shoots light between certain hills and helps calculate the arrival days wandering saiga herds.

DMITRIY DEI, ARCHAEOLOGIST:

We have tested this hypothesis at our sites, and it works. It showed that our geoglyphs can also be used as a horizontal solar observatory.

For instance: if you stand in the center of this figure on June 21 the sun will rise in the direction of one ray, then will be at the zenith at the second ray, and will set on the third ray.

DMITRIY DEI, ARCHAEOLOGIST:

Now we are entering the international project and changing our status. The international community has demonstrated a huge interest. This is a discovery of a new previously unknown fact in our history. For Kazakhstan, it is a PR project because recognition of Kazakhstan’s geoglyphs, I believe, will be of the same importance as of the Egyptian Pyramids.

The expedition will continue this year, the researchers say. The purpose is to carry out measurements and identify the creation date of the monuments that are even more ancient than the pyramids in Egypt. Anyone willing can be part of project.
