The 71st session of the UN General Assembly is under way in New York. A number of unique events took place on the forum’s platform. Thus, the Political Declaration on Antibiotic Resistance was adopted for the first time. In addition, representatives of 31 states handed Paris Climate Deal ratification instruments to the UN Secretary General. Kazakhstan proposed to promote anti-nuclear initiatives at the session. Kazakh Foreign Minister held a speech at the 8th ministerial meeting of the Organization of the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty.

 

Erlan IDRISSOV, KAZAKH MINISTER OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS:

We appeal to the remaining 8 countries to demonstrate strong political will and ratify the Treaty without any conditions. We welcome the initiative on support of the Treaty through the adoption of UN Security Council Resolution but we believe that this is a minimum step at the current stage and urge all UN member-states to take more comprehensive and decisive actions so that the Treaty came into force as soon as possible.

 

The discussion was attended by Foreign Ministers of Japan, Germany, Canada, South Korea, Netherlands and representatives from the EU and other organizations. Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Garcia-Margallo confirmed participation of Spain on Expo-2017 in Astana. The politician also emphasized the importance of the forthcoming work of Kazakhstan in the UN Security Council.

The new President of the UN General Assembly expressed his support to Kazakhstan’s initiatives. Peter Thomson noted that he knows the priorities Kazakhstan adheres to in its activities on international arena.
