Kyzylorda prosecutors have recommended to ban smartphones in schools. The reason was the upsetting statistics. According to experts of the supervisory body, 106 adolescents in the region were part of a group that promotes suicide in social networks. In addition, 65% of crimes committed in schools involve stolen gadgets. The Ministry of Education and Science says that the decision to ban smartphones should be taken by both school directors and parents.

Aigerim ALIBEKOVA, PRESS SECRETARY, KAZAKH MINISTRY OF EDUCATION AND SCIENCE:

School’s administration should first discuss this norm with Parents’ Council. Then, after the decision is taken changes should be introduced in the school charter or internal daily schedule. This measure will apply to both teachers and school students.

The prosecutors believe that the ban on smartphones in schools will have a positive impact on students’ achievements as they will not be distracted during classes. The supervisory agency is also assured that this limitation will comfort children from poor families since their parents cannot afford expensive electronic devices.
