The President of Kazakhstan examined the readiness of facilities for the upcoming Universiade. Nursultan Nazarbayev visited Almaty ice arena, which will host the opening and closing ceremonies of the Winter Universiade, as well as figure skating and curling competitions next year. The President also held the first working meeting.

Nursultan NAZARBAYEV, PRESIDENT OF KAZAKHSTAN:

Is the registration continuing this year?

Bauyrzhan BAIBEK, MAYOR OF ALMATY:

Yes. The whole year.

Asset ABDUALIYEV, HEAD OF INTERNATIONAL SPORT PROJECTS OFFICE, ALMATY:

The whole year.

Three new facilities should be put into operation for the 28th World Winter Universiade in Almaty. They are Ice Palace, Arena and Athletic Village. Contractors promise to complete the construction until August 30. Competitions will be held in 12 disciplines. 35 countries out of planned 55 ones have already confirmed their participation.

Almost half of the materials used in the construction were manufactured in Kazakhstan. This is also part of the anti-crisis measures and the multiplier effect in the form of support for domestic companies. According to economists’ estimates, part of the costs should be repaid during the games. After the completion of the Universiade sport facilities will not stand idle. For example athletic village will become housing for citizens under the ‘Affordable Housing’ program.

Nursultan NAZARBAYEV, PRESIDENT OF KAZAKHSTAN:

Several new facilities will be commissioned ahead of the Universiade. I have already inspected some of them.  These facilities are unique for Almaty.

Arystanbek MUKHAMEDIULY, KAZAKH MINISTER OF CULTURE AND SPORTS:

Now athletes are actively preparing for the Universiade. We hope Kazakhstan’s athletes will be able to achieve good results.

New facilities are located outside the city center. At present, infrastructure is under construction. However, Alatau district could be well populated in the future. In general, there are all conditions for the development of Almaty. Nursultan Nazarbayev stressed that it is important to develop the economic capacity and technology, and tells how to do it.

Nursultan NAZARBAYEV, PRESIDENT OF KAZAKHSTAN:

All scientific discoveries, new technologies are usually created in large metropolitan areas. This practice is observed around the world. Therefore I attach great importance to the creation of large cities with a population of one million in Kazakhstan. Almaty is the first city with a million people; Astana has almost reached that number. About one million people live in Shymkent and Aktobe. Other cities try to reach that number too so that we had 4-5 large cities with a population of one million people, that's when science and technology will be developed at necessary level.

Asset ISSEKESHEV, KAZAKH MINISTER OF INVESTMENTS AND DEVELOPMENT:

We pay particular attention to foreign investments as you instructed. We monitor all the projects all together. 10 projects out of 150 will be implemented in Almaty with the help of foreign investors. This year, two transnational companies will launch a number of factories despite the crisis.

The city waiting for a huge influx of tourists during the Universiade should be able to accept them. In the meantime, Almaty airport can barely cope with the current volume of passengers. There only four ramps for 5 million passengers.

Nursultan NAZARBAYEV, PRESIDENT OF KAZAKHSTAN:

We have been hearing about that Kapshagai for years. Nothing is done here. First, we need to calculate how much time it takes for a person to get there from the airport. Asset Arientayevich consult with shareholders, make a concrete plan with the residents and do it quickly. If there is something to do inside terminals then do it. We need the airport to be ready to serve a huge number of people

Nursultan NAZARBAYEV SHOPS IN ALMATY SUPERMARKET:

The head of state visited another object today - Kazakhstan's largest hypermarket Carrefour (Carrefour). It is located in a densely populated area of the metropolis. More than 500 Kazakh companies deliver their products here, of which 130 suppliers from Almaty and Almaty region.

In the near future, they plan to open 9 hypermarket branches and 20 super markets around the country.

Nursultan Nazarbayev could not resist from shopping. The Head of State mostly chose food produced in Kazakhstan.
