Transition to Latin Script
Pressing issues of the transition to the Latin script have been discussed at the round table in Astana. The discussion took place in the National Museum of Kazakhstan. Scientists, public figures and teachers shared their vision of the introduction of the Latin script in Kazakhstan.
ZHUMAGUL ABSEMETOVA, SENIOR RESEARCHER, NATIONAL MUSEUM OF KAZAKHSTAN:
- The most important thing is that after the transition to the Latin script it will become a part of our life: of education, communication, spiritual life. Therefore, it is important to adopt a convenient version of the new alphabet. This is the main issue.
The Latin script will more precisely convey the phonetic system of Kazakh language, linguists of the Aral Sea region believe. According to professor Aman Abassilov, transition to the Latin script will require active participation of Kazakh phoneticians. The PhD Candidate of Philology offers to elaborate the theoretical framework that will reflect acoustical-articulatory and functional-linguistic aspects.
AMAN ABASSILOV, PHD CANDIDATE OF PHILOLOGY, PROFESSOR:
- Specialists in the field of linguistics, phonetics, phonology, grammatology, and graphemics have to solve a number of issues at the initial stage. For example, how to designate specific sounds, and borrowed words? It is necessary to develop a unified theoretical framework that will ensure a competent transition to a new standard, will not only allow us to adapt to the articulation of Kazakh pronunciation, but will also preserve the identity of the language and its sound system.
The new script will give more opportunities for communication, Kazakhstani young people believe. There are fewer letters in the project and it will be easier to learn them. Knowledge will let young specialists become more competitive, students say.
AYAZHAN SHERY, STUDENT, PAVLODAR BUSINESS COLLEGE:
- I support this idea. There is some terminology that can hardly be designated in Kazakh or Russian. We are returning to the same alphabet that was used before. Our ancestors wrote in the Latin. Many documents were written in the Latin.
According to experts and the public, transition to the Latin script will give Kazakhstan specific advantages: in the age of globalization and technologies it will be easier to exchange information with the whole world; it will give an opportunity to acquaint other countries with the Kazakh culture. The transition will contribute to the development and modernization of the entire Kazakh society.
