A hackathon was held as part of Astana Innovations Challenge. Participants had to create a new innovative project in 48 hours. The competition was organized by the Astana Mayor’s Office, business incubator ‘Most’ and Astana Innovations – an agency that brings together the city authorities, engineers and the business community to find innovative infrastructure solutions. The event is aimed at encouraging young start-uppers to design new solutions and become part of the changes that will help make Astana a "smart" and comfortable city to live.

ZHANNAT DUBIROVA, DEPUTY CHAIRMAN, ASTANA INNOVATIONS:

 - Astana Innovations conducts an analysis of the city’s infrastructure. Based on that, we define topics that need to be addressed, the challenges where technologies are needed. Today's topic is water conservation and waste sorting.

As a result of the hackathon, the jury selected three most interesting projects that will get implemented. The winners will also take part in the international startup competition to be held in Istanbul in February 2018.

AIBEK KOKANBEKOV, COMPETITION WINNER:

 - We have developed a system that gives a resident certain amount of points depending on the weight and type of disposed garbage. A resident can use these points later for utility services.

A construction company showed interest in the waste sorting project. Smart waste containers will soon appear in one of the districts in Astana. Organizers will hold two more competitions, where anyone with a creative idea and a project aimed to improve the city infrastructure will be welcome to take part.
