 - There were warriors on my mother’s side of the family. People made legends about them. I listened to the stories about them since I was a boy. I have thoroughly studies their history before making costumes. Then I decided that I need to introduce people to the history of the Kazakh warriors.

The head of the theater, Muslim Zhumagaliyev, hired not only tall but smart actors. The contenders were tested for knowledge of the Kazakh history as well as the intellectual and educational skills. The future artists’ endurance was also tested.

ASKHAT KHALIMOV, DIRECTOR, THEATER’S TRADITIONAL COSTUMES GROUP:

 - The weight of the lightest costume is ten kilograms, and the heaviest costume is almost 30 kilograms. Many men cannot carry such weight.

Now, there are about 400 costumes in the theater’s collection. They reflect cultures of the Saka people, Kanglys, Wusuns, and the Huns that populated the territory of Kazakhstan.

ASKHAT KHALIMOV, DIRECTOR, THEATER’S TRADITIONAL COSTUMES GROUP:

 - Every costume has its own history. For instance, in different ages, warriors of various tribes had their own preferences in decorating their weapons. That’s why we explain the meaning of decorations of every costume during our performances.

The United Kingdom consulate expressed interest in Muslim Zhumagaliyev’s traditional outfits and offered to buy them, but the creator decided to keep them as a historic legacy. Now the batyrs’ theater travels around the world to present the ancient culture and to tell the glorious stories of our ancestors.
