American Humming House folk group performed Abai Kunanbayev’s song “Aittym Salem, Kalamkas." The musicians performed in Semey, the homeland of the Kazakh poet. They and college students gave a special flavor to the Kazakh music. This unusual combination of Western and Eastern motives in the melody left the audience wanting more.

MATHEW WILSON, ASSISTANT CULTURAL AFFAIRS OFFICER, U.S. EMBASSY IN KAZAKHSTAN:

 - These guys came from Tennessee under the American Music Abroad program. We fund musicians to travel around the world so they can share their music, learn new things about different cultures and bring it back to America and use them in their music.

NAZERKE AKKOZHINA, HEAD OF CULTURE DEPARTMENT, MAYOR’S OFFICE OF SEMEY:

 -  In general, the concert of the band was planned in Astana and Almaty. The city’s department of culture closely cooperates with the US embassy, and the people in Semey also had a unique opportunity to get acquainted with the work of American musicians. In the near future, to be specific in summer, we intend to invite two more groups and we will organize another wonderful concert.
