Guests and residents of Astana can visit all the corners of Kazakhstan within a half-hour excursion owing to a travel guide in the form of a unique open-air museum complex ‘The map of Kazakhstan, Atameken’. The museum complex was opened 16 years ago. A large-scale project, initiated by the Head of State back in 2001, is supplemented with new exhibits every year. Approximately 400 small scale models of the country’s main attractions are located on two hectares. Stylized mountains, steppes, forests, lakes and largest cities give the opportunity to visit every city in Kazakhstan. Visitors can even touch the exhibits.

LYAZZAT YERMAGAMBETOVA, ACTING DIRECTOR, ETHNO-MEMORIAL COMPLEX, MAP OF KAZAKHSTAN, ATAMEKEN:

- All models are made of modern plastic for model manufacturing which are heat and moisture resistant. A large team of masters, artists and architects from all over Kazakhstan work on the models’ creation and restoration.

The museum hosts daily excursions for visitors. The visitors are introduced to history of the state as well as to culture and traditions. According to guides, this summer interest in the museum has increased significantly owing to EXPO 2017 in Astana.

KAMIL KRUPKA, TOURIST, CZECH REPUBLIC:

- Atameken is what tour groups should see in the first place. So visitors become aware about the great country which has this beauty, nature and sights

One of the most popular places in the museum is the hall dedicated to Astana’s left bank. Moreover, the hall shows the business center of the young capital. The ethno-memorial complex plans to create new models devoted to EXPO 2017. The map of Kazakhstan, Atameken is the only museum of this type in the CIS.
