Astana Opera hosted Giuseppe Verdi’s La Traviata featuring Placido Domingo. The great opera singer of our times played the part of Giorgio Germont. Famous Latvian soprano Marina Rebeka played Violetta's aria. The star of the world opera won the people’s affection with flawless acting, magnificent singing and scenic charm. She has been part of more than 15 different productions of Verdi's masterpiece. Her interpretation of Violetta’s part is considered one of the most captivating and accurate performances in the world. According to Placido Domingo, Rebeka is one of the best performers of Violetta, whom he has heard over the past 50 years.

- Whatever the production is, La Traviata is complex. You can’t get into someone else's skin, it must be yours. You must feel, understand and do it. This is a very dense play. There are a lot of different colors, shades and nuances. Every time you can find something new on the stage.

- But also because of my extended time working with the wonderful orchestra of this opera house, I found the musicians of the orchestra to be so advanced musically with a tremendous humanity and individuality in their sound and I think that maybe due to the high level now of conductors from Kazakhstan who have been working with them. I know that the staff of the opera house was extremely supportive of me and maestro Domingo in everything that we needed musically and that tremendous preparation for us.

Famous Kazakh tenor and leading Astana Opera soloist, Medet Shotabayev performed the role of Alfredo Germont, beloved of Violetta. The artist said that it was challenging to perform this role because this part was the first major role of Placido Domingo and a landmark in his career. Traviata was staged at the end of Operalia, the world’s most prestigious contest of vocalists that was founded by maestro Domingo. Opera singers’ performance was one of the most spectacular events held as part of the EXPO 2017.
