Kazakhstani citizens were able to get acquainted not only with mosaic art of the European masters, but also to witness and even try exotic dishes of Southeast Asia in all its diversity. Astana hosted a cultural festival of the ASEAN countries, organized by the embassies of Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam. Every festival guest made a fascinating journey around four countries, admiring products of arts and crafts, souvenirs and tasting of local cuisine. Colorful dance and song show entertained the guests throughout the evening.

Festival has become a real gift for lovers of Asian food. Most delicious food was offered to festival guests. For example, Vietnamese cuisine features abundance of seafood. It has resemblances and historical exchange with cuisines of China, Thailand, and even France.

DOAN THI XUAN HIEN, VIETNAMESE AMBASSADOR TO KAZAKHSTAN:

Our chefs have cooked some of the best dishes of the Vietnamese cuisine. The most famous of them are the rolls called ‘Nem’ with meat, carrots and onions. We cook delicious food and invite guests, friends and family during national and state holidays. ASEAN countries have always been peace-loving and friendly states. We hope that every guest will be able to visit the festival in our country.

Malaysian art attracted the attention of the visitors as well. Wood carving and weaving reeds are very developed in the country. Batik – a technique of wax-resist dyeing applied to whole cloth is very popular among the Malaysian people. Cultural influence of India can be traced in many ways.

SURYATI TAMPIT, ASSISTANT TO MALAYSIAN AMBASSADOR TO KAZAKHSTAN:

I would like to introduce you this thing, we call it ‘the filter’. It is used to filter the peanuts and it is a traditional instrument that we also use for dance and for displaying.

I love Kazakhstan.  I’ve been living here for almost two years and I enjoy it so much.

ANEL MARABAYEVA, RESIDENT OF ASTANA:

Every year we try to attend this event, because it opens to us a wonderful world of Asian countries such as the Philippines, Indonesia and others. Today it was nice to see the performance of foreign visitors and our students, who are fond of Asian culture. As a dancer, I know some features of the Asian dance culture. It is very close to us.

Similar and different at the same time. Despite some similarities of cultures, each member state of the Association of Southeast Asia Nations is a special world with its unique history and traditions. Perhaps, this peculiarity of ASEAN countries is attracting more Kazakh tourists every year.
