Kazakhstan has introduced a thrice weekly direct regular flights from Almaty to Riga, Latvia. Experts said that the new flight will contribute to the development of bilateral relations, increase tourist flows and establish business contacts between the countries.

KAIRAT KAMBAROV, COUNSELOR, EMBASSY OF KAZAKHSTAN IN LATVIA:

 - This is a very important event in the history of the Kazakh-Latvian relations. Representatives of our countries have done a great deal of work on preparing this flight. We expect to increase the number of tourists between Latvia and Kazakhstan.

The transportation of passengers is handled by Latvian national airline, airBaltic. Almaty is the airline’s only route to Central Asia and the second longest route in its network. The new destination is in high demand. Over 120 passengers have travelled to Kazakhstan with the first flight.

SVETLANA ABASHKINA, VICE PRESIDENT FOR INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS, AIRBALTIC:

 - We will continue to consider other areas in Kazakhstan and to increase cooperation. We work very hard to make the flight popular and meet our expectations. We can see from the fully loaded first flight that we might succeed.

Representatives of the international airport in the Latvian capital expect that the Almaty-Riga flight will be in demand not only among tourists and businessmen, but also among transit passengers. Kazakhstan is famous for its rich culture and history whereas Latvia is well known for its nature and the Baltic Sea coast. The introduction of the new flight makes traveling affordable for residents of the two countries.
