COSCO Shipping and “Kazakhstan Temir Zholy” signed an investment agreement

The governments of Kazakhstan and China intend to develop the “Khorgos – Eastern Gate” transport and logistics hub and free trade zone. The main flow of direct and transit freight from China to Kazakhstan and back goes through this border checkpoint. Establishment of the large transport hub allows improving the freight logistics between Asia and Europe. China’s largest international corporation COSCO Shipping and “Kazakhstan Temir Zholy” signed an investment agreement at the Boao Forum.

XU LIRONG, CHAIRMAN, COSCO SHIPPING:

- The agreement that we signed will promote alignment of Kazakhstan’s “Nurly Zhol” program and China’s One Belt, One Road initiative. Our project is currently gaining momentum. This year, the number of containers that we provide will grow 50% compared to 2017 results.

KANAT ALPYSBAYEV, CHAIRMAN, ‘KAZAKHSTAN TEMIR ZHOLY’ NATIONAL COMPANY:

- SEZ “Khorgos – Eastern Gate” is a logistics hub and an industrial zone as well, where we are currently attracting investments from China and, I think, that, this year, we will see a major breakthrough in investments from various provinces of China.

Statistics show that over 80% of trains from China to Europe pass through Kazakhstan. Last year, the total volume of freight turnover totaled about 16 million tonnes. Kazakhstan’s railways officials are planning to improve the indicator to 30 million tonnes by 2025. KTZ chairman believes that the ambitious goal can be achieved, given the results of the One Belt, One Road initiative implementation achieved in 5 years.

KANAT ALPYSBAYEV, CHAIRMAN, ‘KAZAKHSTAN TEMIR ZHOLY’ NATIONAL COMPANY:

- According to the statistics, transits through Kazakhstan from China to Europe and back grew almost 200 times compared to 2011 results.

During the implementation of the One Belt, One Road initiative, China launched more than 50 railway freight routes to Europe connecting 29 cities of eleven European countries with 28 Chinese cities. Development of the logistics routes has allowed strengthening trade relations between China and Europe.
