Ministerial declaration on energy development has been adopted in Astana. This has been the outcome of the Eighth International Forum on Energy for Sustainable Development that took place as part of Astana EXPO 2017. Delegations from more than 80 countries have partaken in the conference. Around 20 foreign ministers and heads of international organizations have come to visit the forum. In the summary of joint statement, the participants have agreed to ensure the access to affordable, reliable and modern energy sources in their countries, as well as to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. More importantly, international experts have supported the idea of ​​establishing an international center of green technologies and investment projects in Astana.

 

GANI SADIBEKOV, KAZAKH VICE MINISTER OF ENERGY:

-The principal goal of the center is to introduce the best international practices in the field of green technologies in Kazakhstan and attract green investments to the country. The opening of the center is planned in one of the expo facilities after the exhibition. The Kazakh government and voluntary funding of extra-budgetary resources will finance the project.

 

According to international experts, the future Green Technologies Center will help Kazakhstan turn the EXPO 2017 into a long term legacy. The exposure and experience that Kazakhstan is going to accumulate in the next three months will get in the world scene. The idea to create the Green Technologies Center was supported by a number of international organizations, including the UN agencies such as UNDP, UNEP, UNIDO and ESCAP.

 

MARCEL ALERS, HEAD OF ENERGY, INFRASTRUCTURE, TRANSPORT AND TECHNOLOGY, UNDP:

 - A number of participating agencies, several United Nations agencies have pledged support to help set this up. So, Kazakhstan can play an important role, I would say, certainly in the sub regions, Central Asia, as an example what can be achieved to start exploiting the abundant renewable energy resources that you have, in particular wind, this is one of the best wind resources in the world.

 

As noted in the Kazakh energy ministry, the Center’s activities will be primarily focused on the promotion of green technologies in Central Asian region.
