The Kazakh farmers have started to grow walnuts. The world’s extant walnuts and the majority sorts of hazelnuts grow on 20 hectares of the Turgen village in Almaty region. Two years later, the farmers will get the first harvest and in four years they will be able to harvest up to 5 tons per hectare.

GIUSEPPE CALCAGNI, VICE PRESIDENT, INTERNATIONAL NUT&AND DRIED FRUIT COUNCIL:

- Nuts grow well in your climate. But there are a couple of moments like droughts in summer and spring frosts during the nut flowering. We brought back the sorts that blossom later. Also, a special planting method allows the nuts to tie in and give a good harvest.

Enthusiasts created the Kazakh association of Producers of Nuts and Berries. The enthusiasts call up the farmers to separate fruit-and-berry gardens. There are a number of arguments: the nut is an expensive product so it does not deteriorate and the demand for it is high in the market. The association is ready to teach the farmers to all the nuances. The new garden will also become an open learning center for all people who want to engage in lucrative agricultural business.

SERGEI TERESHCHENKO, PRESIDENT, KAZAKH NATIONAL UNION OF NUT PRODUCERS:

- Kazakhstan will produce nuts on the area of 1-1.2 million hectares which costs US$ 30 billion. 30 billion-dollars worth nuts! The sale market includes China, India and Arabic-speaking countries. The domestic market provides 4 kilograms of nuts at the rate which means 100,000 tons of nuts can be consumed only in Kazakhstan.

A large plantation of walnut seedlings has emerged at the territory of the entire park in the South Kazakhstan region within a day. 1,250 young trees have been planted there. Scientists chose a place long time ago. They studied the soil and focused on the climate. Thus, the soil is set near the foothills. The local semi-dwarfish is chosen as a seedling which is the Jalal-Abad sort. There are an apricot garden and eight hundred thousand ornamental trees planted near the Greek walnuts. The garden consists of maple, ash, conifers and karagash trees. In the future, it is planned to plant the garden on the banks of the Syr Darya River and to plant in the cities. This year, it is expected to realize the new intensive gardens and walnut plantations in the regions of 1,500 hectares.

NYSANBEK BERDENOV, DIRECTOR, BRANCH OF REGIONAL NATURAL PARK:

- It is planned to increase it to 2 hectares and we will have 4 hectares already. At the same time we will be inter-row here and can increase the walnut fruit, pistachios and peanuts. We want to use the area between the rows so this place can become the country’s nut-fruit area.
