Operational length of public railways in Kazakhstan has been kept at the level of 15,300 kilometers for the third consecutive year. The last expansion was observed in 2013 by 0.1%, in 2012 by 3%. There was a decrease in length of railway lines until then. According to energyprom.kz, construction of the second continuous welded rail track with its further electrification will be implemented on the route "Almaty-1 - Shu" in order to improve transport efficiency and will be completed in 2016. The project will increase the speed, reduce the trains’ transit time and increase the carrying capacity in the area.
