German company Volkswagen will pay $15.3 billion to owners of VW or Audi diesel vehicles and to the U.S. government. As previously revealed, the company has cheated on emissions tests for diesel-fueled vehicles. Nearly half a million such vehicles have been sold in the U.S. Part of the fine will be spent for the development of clean technologies. It is the largest fine in the auto industry in U.S. history. In September last year, the company acknowledged that they used computer programs that allow to understate diesel engines’ emissions level by more than 40 times.
